This insight comes from a ballet instructor who emphasized that stretches held for less than 17 seconds may not achieve their full potential. In high-intensity practices like Bikram yoga, stretches are typically held for around 30 seconds, often in a heated environment to maximize the effectiveness of each stretch. While the heat isn’t necessary for stretching, it can enhance the benefits.

Benefits of Stretching

Stretching offers numerous benefits beyond just improved flexibility. For instance, in the movie Bloodsport, the character Frank Dux demonstrated impressive flexibility, which was mirrored by the actor’s own elasticity. This level of flexibility is also seen in elite athletes, such as Spetsnaz (Russian special forces) who train with Russian kettlebells for superior strength and resilience.

Stretching and flexibility are vital because they enable explosive power and agility without extensive warm-ups. While not everyone is a martial artist or elite agent, the advantages of stretching are broad and accessible.
